A practical guide to RV ownership

Know your RV.
Enjoy the journey.

An RV gives you a place to sleep, cook and explore. It also asks you to think about things a car or hotel holiday rarely does. This is a practical guide to those less obvious decisions, whether you are curious, choosing your first vehicle or already learning on the road.

Start where you are

Where are you in your RV journey?

If you are considering an RV, start with how you will use it: who travels, where it will live between trips and the routines you need inside. If you have just collected one, start with a short first trip and learn its systems before relying on them far from help.

Worth knowing

What can catch new owners out

The number of beds is not necessarily the number of people who can travel. And a cupboard with room left in it does not tell you how much weight you can still carry.

Ownership includes the living area as well as the vehicle underneath. Your engine service does not answer every question about water, heating, damp or appliances. Overnight parking is another separate decision: a space big enough for your vehicle is not automatically permission to stay.

Before you start exploring

Does RV mean the same thing as motorhome?

RV means recreational vehicle. Here it covers motorhomes, campervans and towable accommodation such as caravans. We use the more specific term where the difference matters.

Can hiring help me decide whether to buy?

Yes. Use a hire trip to test parking, packing, beds, facilities and daily setup. Record what was a layout problem and what was simply unfamiliar equipment.

What should I check before my first trip?

Confirm vehicle suitability, the place you will stay and how to use essential systems. A short trip with accessible facilities is a useful starting point.
