Choose an RV

What to consider before choosing a campervan

A campervan can be appealing as both transport and a compact place to stay. Compactness, however, changes the routine. Beds may replace seats, luggage may need moving and some everyday facilities may be outside the vehicle.

Compact does not mean effortless

A smaller footprint can help in ordinary driving and parking, but it does not remove height restrictions or loaded-weight limits. Consider how often you will convert furniture and whether another person can still move around while one is cooking or resting.

Roof and bed choices

A pop-top can provide standing or sleeping space when raised, but introduces canvas exposure and an extra setup routine. A high roof provides permanent height with a different exterior footprint. Try the bed access, headroom and ventilation arrangements rather than choosing by appearance.

Facilities you may depend on elsewhere

Check toilet, shower and cooking arrangements honestly. Depending on campsite facilities is a reasonable choice if you plan suitable stops. It is less convenient if your expected trips involve late arrivals, reduced mobility or locations without those services.

Inspect the conversion as well as the van

A conversion deserves its own evidence. Ask about travel seating, restraint suitability, installed systems and the work’s documentation. A tidy interior cannot demonstrate the safety or quality of hidden fittings. A suitable independent inspection can help with uncertainties.

Questions you might still have

Can I camp comfortably without a built-in toilet?

It can work if your routines and stops support it. Consider night-time needs, privacy and access to facilities before assuming a portable option will suit everyone.

Will a pop-top fit under every height barrier?

No. Use the measured travel height, including accessories, and check actual restrictions. A lowered roof does not guarantee access.

What should I check in a converted van?

Check construction records, seating, installation documentation, moisture signs and how each facility works. Use appropriate specialists for questions you cannot verify yourself.
