Prepare your RV for overseas touring

An overseas RV trip combines ordinary touring with country-specific documents, driving conditions and supply differences. Check the destination and transit countries separately, and keep your plan tied to the actual vehicle and travellers.

List countries and the actual vehicle

List every country and crossing, then record dimensions and weights for the complete vehicle or outfit. Confirm rental permission if applicable. Include passengers and pets in the planning so their documentation is not discovered late.

Check documents and cover

Use current official guidance for vehicle documents, driving entitlement, insurance, breakdown and entry requirements. Check environmental or road-charging schemes against the vehicle. Rules and exceptions differ, so do not assume a previous trip’s paperwork remains sufficient.

Book crossings with accurate measurements

Book using complete measurements, including carriers or roof fittings where the operator requires them. Check the crossing provider’s conditions for equipment, fuel systems and accessibility. Leave realistic time for checks and changes of plan.

Plan for different supplies and facilities

Plan electrical connections, fuel replenishment, water and disposal using suitable information for each destination. Gas cylinder and connection arrangements can differ. Get competent advice rather than improvising a fitting that happens to connect.

Prepare a country-specific departure file

Keep the verified documents, operator details, support contacts and country-specific requirements together. Recheck time-sensitive items before departure. Include a plan for illness, breakdown or a delayed return, not only the outward journey.

Questions you might still have

Does domestic insurance automatically cover overseas touring?

No. Confirm countries, duration, use and applicable exclusions with your insurer and breakdown provider.

Should ferry dimensions include bikes and roof equipment?

Use the operator’s measurement instructions for the complete vehicle. Do not rely on the base vehicle length or height where accessories change it.

Can I exchange my gas cylinder in another country?

Not necessarily. Supply formats and compatibility differ; plan approved options rather than assuming a familiar cylinder can be exchanged everywhere.

What changes if I take a pet?

Check current destination, transit and return requirements with official guidance and a vet. Identification, vaccination and documentation may have specific timing.
