RV travel

Prepare your RV outfit before towing

A safe towing plan starts with the complete outfit and its load. The towing vehicle, trailer, equipment and driver each bring requirements. Verify them together before focusing on reversing or choosing a holiday route.

Check the whole loaded combination

Use both vehicles’ documents and actual loaded figures. Check towing capacity, combination and axle limits alongside driving entitlement. Licence permission does not override manufacturer limits. Use the official guidance for your jurisdiction and outfit.

Load for stability and carrying limits

Follow approved loading guidance and the equipment’s limits, including relevant hitch or nose-load requirements. Secure items and consider where heavy loads sit. Do not assume the same packing method works for every trailer design.

Connect using the equipment instructions

Use the instructions for the actual coupling and safety equipment. Before travel, check the connections, braking arrangement, lights, tyres and load security. A generic internet sequence cannot substitute for knowing your own equipment.

Build manoeuvring skills

Practise turns, observation and reversing in suitable conditions, ideally with appropriate instruction. Allow extra space and time. Site entrances and slopes may be harder than the open road, so check destination access while planning.

Recognise instability and stop to reassess

If handling becomes unstable, follow authoritative safety guidance and arrange assessment of the outfit and loading. Do not continue merely because the car’s headline towing capacity appears adequate. Resolve the cause before resuming demanding travel.

Questions you might still have

Is the car towing rating the only limit I need to check?

No. Check the complete set of applicable vehicle, trailer, axle and combination limits, plus driver entitlement.

Can poor loading affect stability below the overall weight limit?

Yes. Distribution and equipment requirements matter as well as total weight. Use the approved guidance for the outfit.

Should I practise reversing before a holiday?

Yes. Controlled practice or training is useful before facing a tight site entrance or manoeuvre with other traffic waiting.
