Check an overnight stop before settling in

A stopover can provide a useful rest without a full campsite stay. It still needs current permission and practical suitability. Check the conditions before you arrive and stay ready to use a fallback if the place does not fit.

Check who permits the stay

Identify who controls the location and check current signs or operator guidance. Official schemes may permit overnight use at selected sites under particular conditions. That permission does not extend automatically to nearby car parks or other land.

Read what overnight means here

Check the duration, vehicle requirements and activities allowed. Parking, sleeping and setting up outside may have different conditions. Scotland’s outdoor access rights do not include motor vehicles, so do not treat general access guidance as RV permission.

Check the site in practice

Consider entrance height, surface, space to leave, noise and security. A location can permit overnight use yet still be unsuitable for your vehicle or occupants. Arrive with enough time to assess the actual place rather than relying solely on an old review.

Arrive prepared for missing facilities

Check whether water, toilets, waste disposal or power are supplied. Plan to arrive with capacity for the stay and to use authorised service facilities elsewhere. Never assume a drain at the stop is suitable for vehicle waste.

Leave considerately and keep a fallback

Keep disturbance and external setup within the conditions and leave no waste. If permission or safety is unclear, use the planned alternative. A convenient location is not worth relying on an unsupported assumption when you are already tired.

Questions you might still have

Does permission to park include sleeping in the vehicle?

Not automatically. Verify sleeping permission and the location’s current conditions.

Can I put out an awning at a stopover?

Only where the operator’s conditions permit it. A stopover may allow an overnight vehicle without campsite-style setup.

What if there is no waste disposal point?

Plan an authorised disposal stop elsewhere and enough onboard capacity. Do not empty waste into an unsuitable drain or onto the ground.
